Book Review: Flawless by Sara Shepard

In the exclusive town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, where the sweetest smiles hide the darkest secrets, four pretty little liars--Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna--have been very bad girls. . . .
Spencer stole her sister's boyfriend. Aria is brokenhearted over her English teacher. Emily likes her new friend Maya . . . as much more than a friend. And Hanna's obsession with looking flawless is literally making her sick. But the most horrible secret of all is something so scandalous it could destroy their perfect little lives.

And someone named "A" is threatening to do just that. At first they thought A was Alison, their friend who vanished three years ago . . . but then Alison turned up dead. So could A be Melissa, Spencer's ultracompetitive sister? Or Maya, who wants Emily all to herself? What about Toby, the mysterious guy who left town right after Alison went missing?

One thing's for certain: A's got the dirt to bury them all alive, and with every crumpled note, wicked IM, and vindictive text message A sends, the girls get a little closer to losing it all.

My Review:
This was an excellent follow up to Pretty Little Liars. I was strangely swept up in the secrets and drama that surround these girls-past and present. I was still wondering who 'A' was and drawing up a list of possible suspects! That is what makes the book fun! IMHO, 'A' is female. I decided that based on the tone of the messages-it was girly and bitchy! I was thinking about Melissa, Maya, Jenna, Mona and Alison's dumped best friends as my top suspects at the moment. At the moment I don't really think it's Jenna, despite her having a clear motive.

I really liked finding out what happened on the night of the Jenna Thing. It's interesting that when Alison does something nasty, all the girls seem to be held responsible for her actions. Nice. Should this not have just been Alison's secret? We know what caused Jenna to lose her sight but are we getting the whole story, even with the conclusion here? With this author and the way the plot twists, you can't really tell! I like Jenna and it would be nice to see more of her character in later books. Toby was a good addition to the book. He steps in to help defend Emily from her nasty ex Ben, when he is threatening to expose her secret kiss with Maya, then we see his big dark secret.

So what develops in this book? Maya is still trying to persuade Emily to come out and Emily is resisting, afraid of what everyone will think of her. Aria's brother discovers his dad's affair, Hanna is unsure whether to give her absent dad another chance, Aria is getting cosy with Sean who Hanna wants to get back with, Emily likes Toby and Melissa proves that she has a ruthless side over Spencer's fling with Wren. Things are certainly hotting up! My school life was so boring by comparison...of course, I was never friends with a bitch like Alison either!

Best bits of the book? I loved this new side of Melissa, getting her own back on her cheating ex and her sister. I didn't expect it and although Spencer is my favourite character, I did feel she got a bit of what she deserved. Mind you, her parents really need a damn good slap for the way they always favour Melissa. 'A' is brilliant in this book, doing some really basty things to the girls. I loved her bitchy plans. 'She' tells Hanna that Sean has another girl, causing a massive fight between Hanna and Aria, 'She' tells Aria's mother about her husband's affair which rips Aria's family apart and tells Melissa that Spencer is still seeing Wren. Melissa's wrath was a joy to behold! I also love the bitch that is Mona! She really is funny and nasty about Hanna spending time with her old friends. And of course, I really liked the Jenna story coming out.

Actually, there wasn't much not to like about the book. The plot gets juicier as we go along, 'A' gets nastier and we are still wondering who killed Alison. Pretty much anyone who met her could be a suspect, including her own mother!

Looking forward to seeing what happens next.
