Featured Author: Aurora Sky:Vampire Hunter by Nikki Jefford(Aurora Sky #1)

Leaving Alaska after graduation is no longer an option for eighteen-year-old Aurora Sky once government agents pull her from the wreckage of a head-on collision.

In exchange for her life Aurora must serve as a vampire hunter. Basically she’s a glorified chew toy. All thanks to her rare blood type, which sends a vampire into temporary paralysis before she has to finish the job by hand.

Aurora's dark mood is attracting the wrong kind of attention - namely that of Fane Donado's. He's a prince alright. The dark prince of temptation.

It's one thing to swap spit, but if the fangs come out there's no telling who will go down first.

(Mature YA/New Adult series. Contains mild language, violence, sexual situations . . . and blood sucking.)

"Full of action from the very first page, Aurora Sky is a book that will have the reader hanging onto every word, staying up late into the night to find out just what is going to happen next!" (Misti Pyles)

Featured Author: Duplicity by Nikki Jefford(Spellbound #2)

If Graylee Perez thought sharing a body with her twin sister was bad, dealing with a duplicate of herself is two times worse. Gray the second doesn't seem to get that Lee's boyfriend, Raj, is off limits. Then there's the problem of Adrian. He expects one of the Graylees to be his.

Nearly a year later, the council is on to them for past misdeeds; Lee, along with the rest of the coven, has lost control of her powers; and Gray is being stalked by what looks like the Grim Reaper.

If the two Grays work together, they may stand a chance of setting things right and making it out alive.

"The concept that Jefford has developed with this series is so fantastical and entertaining, it's what peaked my interest to begin with and I love what she is doing with it. The struggle for Lee and Gray in Duplicity was fun to read.  There is a jealousy but also extreme protectiveness, as they really are the same person.  Everyone in their lives is confused by it and both girls end up with bruised feelings on several occasions because of it.  How do you chose which Gray stays and which has to go?  The choice may be made for them if they can't get their crap together and quit fighting each other.
All in all, Duplicity was another fun ride and I can't wait to dig into Enchantment for more!"

Featured Author: Entangled by Nikki Jefford(Spellbound #1)

Two months after dying, seventeen-year-old witch Graylee Perez wakes up in her twin sister Charlene’s body.

Until Gray finds a way back inside her own body, she’s stuck being Charlene every twenty-hour hours. Her sister has left precise instructions on how Gray should dress and behave. Looking like a prep isn’t half as bad as hanging out with Charlene’s snotty friends and gropey boyfriend.

The “normals” of McKinley High might be quick to write her behavior off as post-traumatic stress, but warlock Raj McKenna is the only person who suspects Gray has returned from the dead.

Now Gray has to solve the mystery of her death and resurrection and disentangle herself from Charlene’s body before she disappears for good.

***Entangled is a young adult paranormal fantasy romance suitable for ages 15 and up.***

New Release: Earth Dwellers by David Estes

The Earth Dwellers is the 4th book in BOTH The Dwellers Saga and The Country Saga. The author recommends that BOTH series are read in their entirety before reading this book (The Moon Dwellers, The Star Dwellers, The Sun Dwellers, Fire Country, Ice Country, Water & Storm Country).

All your old favorite characters from both the Dwellers and Country Sagas come together in an epic 7th book!

When President Borg Lecter threatens to wipe all four native tribes off the face of the earth, Adele designs a plan that will send her deep into the belly of the beast.

At the same time, Dazz must convince the new ice country consortium to the Unity Alliance, a pact with the Tri-Tribes that may be their only hope of survival.

Meanwhile, Tristan is forced to face his greatest challenge, the unification of the Tri-Realms, in an attempt to garner support against Lecter and the earth dwellers.

Finally, Siena and the Tri-Tribes march on the Glass City in an attempt to take the fight to Lecter and his army of killers.

The entire world, both under and above the earth's surface, sits on the edge of a knife. Will the efforts of Adele, Tristan, Dazz, and Siena be enough to save the ones they love?

Released September 2013.

Spotlight: David Estes and the Country Saga

The Country Saga is the sister series to the Dwellers series, so why not read The Dwellers trilogy and follow up with the Country Saga? This 6 book drama comes to a head with a new 7th book later this year!

In a changed world where the sky bleeds red, winter is hotter than hell and full of sandstorms, and summer's even hotter with raging fires that roam the desert-like country, the Heaters manage to survive, barely.

Due to toxic air, life expectancies are so low the only way the tribe can survive is by forcing women to procreate when they turn sixteen and every three years thereafter. It is their duty as Bearers.

Fifteen-year-old Siena is a Youngling, soon to be a Bearer, when she starts hearing rumors of another tribe of all women, called the Wild Ones. They are known to kidnap Youngling girls before the Call, the ceremony in which Bearers are given a husband with whom to bear children with.

As the desert sands run out on her life's hourglass, Siena must uncover the truth about the Wild Ones while untangling the web of lies and deceit her father has masterfully spun.

Spotlight: David Estes and the Evolution series

David Estes was born in El Paso, Texas but moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when he was very young. David grew up in Pittsburgh and then went to Penn State for college. Eventually he moved to Sydney, Australia where he met his wife. A reader all his life, he began writing novels for the children's and YA markets in 2010, and started writing full time in June 2012. Now he travels the world writing with his wife, Adele. David's a writer with OCD, a love of dancing and singing (but only when no one is looking or listening), a mad-skilled ping-pong player, and prefers writing at the swimming pool to writing at a table.

David has had great success with his Dwellers series which you can find out more about in my previous blog posts! (see my blog post list on right of the page for The Dwellers trilogy and my Moon Dwellers review). The Evolution trilogy was his first project! Why not take a look?

Something about him scares her.

Is all as it appears? While Taylor struggles for answers, she finds herself in the middle of a century old war centered on one miraculous revelation: evolution.

Book Review: Blood Heavy by SLJ Shortt

It's all fun and games until someone gets eaten.

Seventeen year old Daniel ‘Jerry’ Jericho’s life is thrown into a blender made of claws and fangs when he’s dragged into the middle of the supernatural world he never knew existed.

After it’s discovered that his blood has the ability to remove the age old weaknesses from which vampires have always suffered, he becomes the most valuable human on the planet. Drinking his blood makes them immune to silver, stakes and even sunlight. But the door swings both ways and locked inside his veins might be the key to creating a permanent cure that would completely eradicate the species.

Now he’s being hunted by a group of sadistic bloodsuckers, studied by witches, psychics and professors while being protected by a pair of vampire sisters who are constantly on the verge of killing each other. On top of all that he has to deal with teenage hormones and loyal but worried friends as he tries desperately hard to find out what makes his blood so special.

However, the supernatural world might be in for a shock because this kid isn’t going to be a vampire’s happy meal without putting up one hell of a fight. From here on out it’s hunt or be hunted and Daniel Jericho is armed, grinning and ready for some monster killing. But going up against an undead army led by a souped-up ubervamp isn’t exactly a two for one special at the Playboy mansion.

It’s going to get bloody, but that’s okay because Jerry is blood heavy.

Here is my review:
*I received a copy of this book from the author through Never too old for YA in exchange for an honest review*

Jerry is a normal teenage boy until he is attacked by a group of vampires who have discovered that his blood makes them invincible. A rival vampire group hope that his blood could be a cure and they swear to protect him.

I liked this book. The story was a different twist on vampires with Jerry's blood being precious to the sides of good and evil for different reasons. I liked the idea of the cure vs evil drugged up monsters thing, depending on who got to Jerry. There is an interesting mixture of characters, including Uncle Joe the ex-military man, Parker the biology teacher, Cassandra and Claire the vampire sisters, Rachel the psychic child and his human friends. It's not a complicated story and it moves at good speed through each new crisis that Jerry and the gang face. It certainly keeps you interested without boring you with things that don't really matter, and new twists to Jerry's situation happen constantly. There was some humour and pop culture references though it. There is certainly potential for sequels which I'd be interested in looking at.

The one negative for me was the way Jerry was acting like a jackass in the middle part of the book. His 'I'm Rambo hear me roar' attitude really annoyed me. I know it was important to the author for plot purposes but he was just getting on my nerves and the consequences were fatal due to his lack of planning. It didn't stop me liking the book but I hope he stops acting like that in the next one! The only other thing I don't like is named chapter headings. These are like spoilers and I don't really like them in a book. And however much I try not to, me eyes keep going to them! Again it's just personal preference and I would never mark a book down for a little niggle like that. I didn't like the continual musical soundtrack either but it's another minor niggle. The book would benefit from a re-editing as there were continuity errors(characters names being mixed up) plus spelling and other errors.

SPOILER!!!!
[Bit bummed that a few interesting side characters died in the school attack. I'd have liked to see more of them in the next book. I liked Parker and Roache and I thought killing Steve and Sarah as well was overkill.Bummer! (hide spoiler)]

So who would this book appeal to? I think fans of YA paranormal, NA paranormal, UF fans, vampire fans and those who like a good story with a paranormal twist to it. Overall a good read.

Book Review: Gravity Comics Massacre by Vincenzo Bilof

A mind-bending trip down the rabbit hole of terror where aliens, comic books, and nightmares are painted onto a blood-red canvas…
Damien Shears is the best artist alive, but his favorite pastime is killing people. Armed with a pen designed by aliens, Damien illustrates his victims until they fall asleep; in their dreams, they confront their worst nightmares while Damien visits atrocities upon their flesh. His famous comic store has become the perfect tourist attraction for a group of five burn-outs who're looking for a place to party. Reality and dreams collide for the sake of murder and art; the aliens need more data for their analysis of human fear, and people will have to die.

"GRAVITY COMICS MASSACRE is a wild, fast-paced ride into the strangest sectors of your imagination. I dare you to read it without a smile carved into your face; unique and adorably quirky, you can't help but finish this in one sitting. Vincenzo Bilof is what bizarro fiction has been missing." - Max Booth III, author of They Might Be Demons

"For original, literate, Horror that swings between the bizarre and the profane, look no further than Bilof's inventive rendition of the darkest Horror tropes. You might just get what you don't expect!" - William Cook, Editor of Fresh Fear and author of Blood Related.

Here is my review:

*I received a free copy of this book from the author through Making Connections in exchange for an honest review*

Damien is a comic book store owner with artistic talent, a magic pen provided by aliens and a thirst to murder. He draws his victims until they fall asleep, into a nightmare, while he brutally murders them.

I liked the idea of the murderer drawing people and sending them into their worst nightmare so that his alien friends could study human fear, while he gets to murder them. It was a bit different and I liked the start when Damien is killing people. Damien himself is the most interesting of the characters and had a bit of life about him. These were the things that I liked about the book.

The rest of the characters were obnoxious pieces of human filth that needed some of Damien's TLC. I hated them all and would have liked to kill them myself if I had the magic pen. Especially whiny Brain/Brian moaning about how crap his life is and how much he hates his 'friends'. What a complete loser. I wanted to punch him. However I can put up with bad characters if I have the hope that they might get what is coming to them.

The Goodreads description says 'Reality and dreams collide' and this was certainly accurate. However, I admit that I found the whole novella confusing and a bit incomprehensible at times. It was difficult to seperate dream sequences from reality especially when we were following Brian and his psychologist. You were constantly trying to decide if Miko was real or a figment of imagination and by the end I was none the wiser. What happened to Brian in the town? You were never quite sure as it wasn't really made clear when/if he was dreaming/hallucinating. Was Damien or Brian responsible for what happened? No idea. Even the big ending left me trying to work out if this was really meant to be happening or another of Brian's weird dreams. It was just too confusing and mixed up for me.

Not for me I'm afraid.

When Amanda Jennings, a wheelchair-bound college student, moves into an old house to search for clues about the eccentric Dr. James Harcort, she finds journals left behind by the mysterious doctor. As the journals are translated, Amanda discovers several magical spells and rituals, and decides to try one of them out, called the Silverdream Ritual. Unbeknownst to her, at the same time, in another world, Prince Kelvan of Serras begins the Bloodfire Ritual. To their surprise and terror, they crisscross through time and space, finding themselves in each others' worlds. In Amanda's case, she not only finds that she can walk, but that the inhabitants of Elydir believe she is The Coritus, the person who will save them from the evil Emperor Aton. In her old world, Prince Kelvan finds himself unable to walk, and a captive of a man with delusions of grandeur named Professor Michael Stevenson. Amanda, now known as Amen-Jen, is tasked with the epic quest of ridding Elydir of Aton and his half elf, half human witch named Hagah. Assisting her is Prince Kelvan's pet red dragon, Eliazon. Amanda's success or failure is a two-edged sword. If she fails, she will die, leaving Kelvan crippled and trapped in an alien land. If she succeeds and is able to return to her own world, she will go back to living her hum-drum life in a wheelchair.

New Release: The Grave Winner by Lindsey Loucks

Leigh Baxton is terrified her mom will come back from the dead -- just like the prom queen did.

While the town goes beehive over the news, Leigh bikes to the local cemetery and buries some of her mom’s things in her grave to keep her there. When the hot and mysterious caretaker warns her not to give gifts to the dead, Leigh cranks up her punk music and keeps digging.

She should have listened.

Two dead sorceresses evicted the prom queen from her grave to bury someone who offered certain gifts. Bury them alive, that is, then resurrect them to create a trio of undead powerful enough to free the darkest sorceress ever from her prison inside the earth.

With help from the caretaker and the dead prom queen, Leigh must find out what’s so special about the gifts she gave, and why the sorceresses are stalking her and her little sister. If she doesn’t, she’ll either lose another loved one or have to give the ultimate gift to the dead – herself.

Released May 2013.

My review:

* I received a free copy of this book from the author through Goodreads in return for an honest review*

Leigh is mourning the death of her beloved mother as her family tries not to fall apart. When a suicide victim buried nearby comes back from the grave in a grotesque form, Leigh panics that her mother might rise again and decides to bury a few favourite things to keep her in the grave, unaware that she has just started a chain of events that will put everyone she loves at risk.

There were plenty of good things about the book. The writing style was smooth and easy to follow, it wasn't over-descriptive and a decent amount of character development took place. I think the balance was pretty much spot on. Plot wise, it was a nice change to have the story as someone trying not to raise a dead loved one. I liked the story itself and the paranormal elements were nicely woven through the story. It was a bit slow to get into but the second half of the book moves along at a good pace as it reaches its conclusion.

The one thing that did annoy me a bit was the love triangle. Callum was a total jerk and he bugged me every time he messed Leigh about, blaming her for everything he does wrong, and having a go at her about stupid things when the girl is facing death and the end of the world. What is wrong with this idiot? As for Leigh, well put it this way, if I thought my mum was about to come back as a zombie, scary monsters were chasing me, and the end of the world was coming, the last thing on my mind would be which guy I like more! However, as annoying as it was, this is a YA book aimed at the Twilight market so love triangles and teenage hormones are part of that package and most of the target audience probably loved it, so I can hardly blame the author for appealing to her target readers!

Callum aside, I did enjoy reading the book and it will be interesting to see how the story develops in the next book.

New Release: Branded by Abi Ketner and Missy Kalicicki

Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.
Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.

Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.

Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.

The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story.

Released June 2013.

Here is my review of Branded:

*I received a free copy of this book from the author through the YA Dystopian book club in exchange for an honest review*

Lexi lives in a society where the 7 deadly sins will put you in a brutal form of prison called THe Hole. Lexi is wrongly accused of lust and sent there without trial, branded with a blue collar on her neck. The only thing that stands between her and the rapists and murderers is her personal guard Cole.

This was totally different from any dystopian novel that I've read. This was the most brutal society I've read about and the thought of living in it horrifies me. The guards are as deadly as the inmates, there are no rules or protection from psycho rapists and murderers, there is no safe place to be, little sign of humanity and a constant fear for your life. Yet in Cole, his dog Zeus, Dr Sutton and his dying patient, Lexi does find some moments of humanity among the despair. The plot is scary, cruel and sad as you watch the suffering of so many different people. There were a couple of twists that I really didn't expect and plenty action to enjoy. The characters are so well written that you instantly care what happens to them-they are beautifully developed. I was reduced to tears at one point which is rare for me with a book but it shows how much I cared about what was happening. And I loved Zeus! I was worrying all the time about his survival.

We also learn a lot about Lexi and the horrible life that she suffered before her arrest and the betrayals that she suffered. This is done gradually through the book so that you learn gradually and not through big info dumps. Yes there is a romance here with Lexi and Cole but it is slow burning and it only adds to the story. I'm not a fan of overly romantic stories but this one had the balance right and I enjoyed it a lot. The writing style was uncomplicated and the authors did a great job of mixing the horror with the hope, telling the story to keep you hooked.

There wasn't anything wrong with this book, no real negatives that I could mention. There is a bit in the middle that slows a bit more than I'd have liked but nothing that detracts from the story in any way.

This will appeal to dystopian fans of all ages and I look forward to more books by the authors. Great job ladies!

****New Release September 2013****

“You have a fire inside of you.”

Hunter Harrison desperately hopes her guardian Joshua is joking when he confesses – very solemnly – that she is pyrokinetic. Spun into a new life filled with cold truth, terrifying wonder and a mountain of responsibility, Hunter faces the flames dwelling inside her. But the fire is more deadly than Hunter can comprehend. It explodes when she’s angry. It erupts when she’s afraid. And, worst of all, it threatens the life of her boyfriend Eli, who is innocently unaware of her abilities.

So how does an extraordinary teenager juggle dealing with superpowers between work, graduating and keeping her hormones in check?

Simple. By fighting fire with fire.

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes... I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It's a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each others loves - it works wonderfully...

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands - I shall forever remain crosseyed.

I love talking to my readers so email me if you have any questions or even if you just want to chat...
